Neffy is here!
The long-anticipated Neffy, the first needle-free epinephrine nasal spray, was released in September 2024. This device offers a new and more accessible way to treat severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, without the use of a traditional auto-injector. My last post about neffy, the needle-free epinephrine nasal spray discusses the research behind the device.
What is Neffy?
Neffy, a needle-free epinephrine nasal spray is a compact, easy-to-use alternative to epinephrine auto-injectors like EpiPen and Auvi-Q. Instead of an injection, it delivers a precise dose of epinephrine through the nasal mucosa treating anaphylaxis.
Why is Neffy a Big Deal?
For many individuals with food allergies, needle anxiety can be a barrier to timely epinephrine use during an allergic reaction. Neffy eliminates that concern by offering an epinephrine treatment that is needle-free, discreet, and simple to administer. This can be especially beneficial for:
Children and adults with needle phobia
Caregivers who are hesitant to use auto-injectors
Situations where an injection may not be ideal (e.g., in the middle of a high-adrenaline reaction)
How Does Neffy Work?
Neffy is designed to be fast and effective:
Remove the cap
Insert into one nostril
Press to release the dose
The nasal mucosa allows for rapid absorption of epinephrine, quickly reversing symptoms of anaphylaxis. Like traditional auto-injectors, Neffy is not a replacement for emergency medical care, so calling 911 after administration remains essential.
Who Can Use Neffy?
Neffy is approved for individuals weighing at least 30 kg (66 lbs). It is expected to be available for children less than 66lbs in the second half of this year.
What Does This Mean for the Food Allergy Community?
The release of Neffy represents a major step forward in epinephrine accessibility. It offers:
More choices for managing severe allergic reactions
A user-friendly option that may encourage quicker administration
A portable, compact design for easier carrying
Neffy is changing the landscape of food allergy management, offering an innovative, needle-free alternative for epinephrine administration. The medication is quite expensive at this time and difficult for people to obtain through insurance. However, this will change in the future and I’m excited to see it available to the public.
